A Prepress service bureau is also known as ‘service bureau’ for short. The company is involved in providing various DTPs. A DTP is an acronym for ‘Desktop Publishing’, a system that gives you the advantage of using various typefaces, specifying justifications and margins, and embedding graphs and illustrations within the text directly. The powerful DTPs are able to generate illustrations, whereas the less advanced systems allow you to insert illustrations made by some other program.

With the advancement of technology, word processing programs are becoming more advanced and the demarcation line with DTPs (Desktop Publishing Service) is becoming increasingly blurred. However, on an overall basis, it can be said that DTP applications provide you greater control over various typographical facets. A distinct advantage with desktop publishing service is that you are able to see the actual appearance of the document on the display-screen, even before the printouts come. A system that provides this facility is called WYSIWYG (acronym for ‘what you see is what you get’).

The various service bureaus, apart from DTPs, are also involved in providing scanning services and general consultancy services. Certain service bureaus rent out their computers that have DTP- software installed. Although the ambit of services varies from one company to another, there are some core jobs that are done by most of the service-providers. These include image editing, various color correction tasks, digital-file trapping, scanning of high resolution B/W or colored images, digital proofs, typesetting services, color separations, etc.

Once you have armed yourself with all this knowledge, the next task is finding a prepress service bureau that would be able to perform your required tasks in a competent manner. If you do not have any prior knowledge of dealing and working with any service bureau, you might feel confused about how to proceed. You need to remember that the task is pretty similar to searching for a professional photo-lab. You need to discuss with those friends and acquaintances, whom you feel have knowledge about this domain. Ask them about the various bureaus and also clearly mention your budget.

You also need to try out the services provided by the various bureaus, by sending them some test digital files. After you receive the output from the various bureaus, you would be able to compare the quality of services provided by each one of them. This would include various aspects, like the output quality, punctuality of delivery, price charged, etc.

Both digital and traditional prepress services have their place in the world of printing, though digital is slowly wedging its way into position as the only necessary service. There are a lot of differences between digital prepress, and traditional, and after analyzing them, you can understand why many people simply go digital.

First off, both traditional and digital prepress have pretty much the same processes to go through, on paper. The biggest difference is that many of the jobs involved with traditional prepress have to be done physically and by a specialist, whereas with digital prepress many of the jobs are done on a computer, and can be handled by one or several people who specialize in the process as a whole.

Due to the differences between the two types of prepress, digital has merged many of the jobs with that of a graphic designer. For example, a graphic designer in a digital prepress shop might also take on the roll of typesetter, and paste-up (or layout design) specialist. This is because it’s much easier to manipulate these factors with a desktop publishing program than they might have been traditionally where it actually required the physical modification of various aspects of the job. This isn’t to say that the person who takes on these jobs in the digital world is somehow less valuable and therefor has to take on these tasks, it’s merely an example of added efficiency thanks to technology.

Digital prepress has also created some new types of jobs. With new technology comes efficiency, but also new aspects that need to be mastered. For example, someone has to essentially proofread the digital aspects of the job and ensure everything is accounted for and formatted correctly, this is called pre-flighting. This is essential so when the program is sent to the RIP (raster image processor) the program is able to blend all these elements together into a bitmap, or raster image, which is a single image made up from all the digital components of a digital prepress job. RIPping is essentially the final stage before printing. Another job that is needed for digital prepress is that of color management. Proper color management ensures that the integrity of the represented color remains uniform across all forms of media. Assuming the devices producing the images have similar image quality abilities, the image should look exactly the same whether it’s being viewed on your computer screen, or in print. Proper calibration across these mediums is required to ensure this takes place.

Though it may seem like digital prepress is taking over, you should be able to find prepress services to meet your needs, whatever they may be. There are still many quality traditional prepress services available.

As technology progresses, the need for traditional prepress services is dwindling. Most of the focus in the prepress industry is swinging towards digital prepress services.

The reasons why digital is often preferred to traditional include a consolidated workforce, lower costs, and faster turn around. The reason why the workforce is consolidated is that one person can do many of the tasks associated with prepress services. Whereas with tradition prepress, it might take a specialist to perform each task within the process. The skill-sets required for digital prepress often mesh right with graphic design, so many places simply use their graphic design team as their prepress team as well. This does not detract from the quality of the services, but enhances them because it’s less fingers in the pot when preparing a job to go to press.

As you might imagine, this consolidation results in a reduction of costs for both the service provider and, in turn, the customer. Digital prepress doesn’t just lower costs, but is becoming more cost effective because as technology advances, the equipment required for digital services continues to decrease. This, again, saves money for everyone, and makes digital prepress more accessible than it once was.

The process is also much less time consuming. Traditionally, everything is done manually, from graphic layout, to typesetting. With digital prepress just about everything is done on a computer, which makes things much easier to manipulate and change. Traditional prepress also requires the project to go through many hands, to a final proofreading stage. Due to the fact that so many people are involved in the process to begin with, this left a lot of potential points of error. The proofreading stage occurs after plates are cut and negatives are made. If errors are caught during this final proofreading stage, the revision process can often be very lengthy, depending on where the error occurred, because the final proof would have to go through many of the stages of the prepress process all over again, only to be proofread for any new potential errors. Imagine the frustration if an error was caught the second run through. Jobs might be at stake there. With digital prepress, as mentioned before, far fewer people are involved, so the potential for mistakes is reduced overall. Not to mention, with digital prepress, a proof copy is as simple to make as printing a copy out on a desktop printer. It can be checked for errors quickly and easily, and if an error is caught, it can be adjusted within a computer program much faster than the mechanical processes of traditional prepress services. This all occurs before the project gets to the stage of plate cutting, so it’s much less of a hassle to fix mistakes. What this means is a much faster turn around for projects using digital prepress services.

Within printing and publishing industries, prepress is the term used for the procedure that takes place after the initial creation of a print layout, before it is ready for final printing. It is much more cost effective to alter a file during the prepress stage than when it goes to press.

The procedure followed includes manufacturing a print plate, ready to be mounted onto a printing press, the variation of text and imagery and the creation of a high quality print file.

Some prepress services are retouching photographs, file and color correction and typesetting. Operators are most commonly employed by print companies and related services, with newspapers the next largest employer. Whilst the age of modern technology has seen a decrease in the number of traditional prepress jobs available, it has also created digital prepress services and a subsequent demand for digital prepress operators. Normally operators receive the files from their customers electronically, often in a PDF file or a file created by Adobe or Quark applications. Advances in technology have, naturally, greatly shortened the duration of any prepress process.

Prepress specialists use a range of equipment, such as scanners and desktop publishing software, to prepare the files you require.

The typesetting process presents text as graphics on paper or a similar medium. In the past typesetting was carried out by hand by typesetters in printing shops. Later machinery was used, which also became obsolete with the invention of desktop publishing which is the method used nowadays.

An editor normally carries out copy-editing in order to make improvements to the style, format and exactitude of a document. After the copy-editing process, the document goes to a proof-reader for final checks before publication. Proof-reading involves careful reading of a document’s text to make sure there are no errors before it goes to print. Although proof-reading is always done in the final stages, it can also be done as and when required earlier in the procedure.

Another prepress process is markup – a manufactured language that uses annotations to a body of text to provide direction in relation to the text’s arrangement or display. Markup is commonly used in word processing.

The proofing process involves creating an accurate copy of artwork prior to production. Proofs can be produced for images, texts, illustrations and colors – effectively any part of the product.

Prepress services for photographs include retouching, screening and adjustment. Magazine and newspaper publishers and advertising and marketing companies commonly use these.

Prepress procedures are also known as “workflow.” Depending on the specific process, e.g. digital printing, offset, screen printing, workflows alternate. They also vary according to the finished product – book, newspaper, and packaging for a product.

Prepress work is extremely adaptable due to the fact that it is interchangeable with many other parts of the entire production process.

Modern prepress software is designed to manage the workflow as efficiently as possible. With the flexibility of online tools, many different workers – prepress operators, graphic designers, editors etc – can work together on the same project, even in different locations. Many contemporary industries benefit greatly from this, as an increasing number of workers are hired on a freelance basis and worldwide travel for business purposes becomes ever more accessible.

There are a vast number of companies offering a range of services including prepress, graphic design, web development and photography. By covering all of your digital imaging requirements, they promise greater accuracy and consistency than you might get if you outsource each element of your project to separate businesses.

The Internet is a good resource as a starting point if you are looking for a company that will provide you with the prepress services that you need.
